- Course objectives
- The course has two main objectives. The first is a relatively detailed introduction to the most important text in modern philosophy. The second aim is the development of interpretive and critical skills. In the course we will do nothing more than read Descartes' Meditations very slowly and in detail - and when I say slowly and in detail, I mean interpreting at an average rate of 4 paragraphs per hour. We will be noting the terms used, the composition of sentences and paragraphs, the persuasive devices, illustrations, personal notes, punctuation, references, and any other clues that can help us reproduce the author's ideas as faithfully as possible.
- Learning outcomes
- At the end of the course, the student will be able to explain the key points of Descartes' Meditations on the First Philosophy. They will also become familiar with the obligations placed on both the author of a philosophical text and the critical reader. The student will be able to paraphrase, analyze, comment on, and evaluate a philosophical text independently.
