- Course objectives
- The aim of the course is to acquaint students with the history of language thinking from antiquity to the beginning of the 21st century. The lectures describe the development of thinking about language in philosophy, ancient and medieval grammar, to the emergence of modern linguistics and its current developmental tendencies. The structure of the course is based on the generally accepted periodization of the history of language thinking (prehistoric – pre-scientific – scientific period). The course gives an overview of selected theories, approaches, characters and changes of the paradigm of linguistic thinking. Students also work with the primary texts (fragments of texts), comment on their main ideas and evaluate their contribution and inspiration for modern linguistic thinking.
- Learning outcomes
- The students of the course will be able at the end of the course:
- to identify and characterize the different stages of the development of language thinking;
- to identify the main theories, approaches and representatives of the various phases of the development of thinking about the language;
- to evaluate the contribution of older theories on the language of modern linguistics;
- to describe the emergence of modern linguistics and its current state;
- to read, analyze, and comment on professional linguistic text;
- prepare a presentation on selected linguistic theory (a prominent representative of language thinking) - Syllabus
