- Course objectives
- Knowledge of basic Chinese sources to the history of Southeast Asian countries. An optional course, which will be opened preferably for students of the 5th - 6th semesters. The lectures introduce historical sources originated in China and dealing with neighbouring countries, regions in the Chinese cultural and political influence. A special attention will be given to Vietnam and South Eastern Asia. At least one lecture will deal with historical chronicles composed in Vietnam in literary Chinese. On the general level, the lectures aim to understand how the traditional China perceived the outside world and how this perception is reflected in historical literature.
- Learning outcomes
- At the end of the course students will have a general knowledge about several types and categories of Chinese sources to the history of lands and regions in the sphere of Chinese cultural and political influence. For students, who in the Master degree study will orientate themselves to the historical research, the course will help with choosing relevant Chinese-written sources.

- 1. Introduction. A concise overview and classification of sources. 2. Origins and beginnings of historiography in China. 3. Sources to the period of Han - Sui dynasties. 5. Sources to the period of Tang dynasty. 6. Sources to the period of Song dynasty. 7. Sources to the period of Yuan dynasty. 8. Sources to the period of Ming dynasty. 9. Sources to the period of Qing dynasty. 11. Main Vietnamese chronicles written in Chinese. 12. Chinese geographical treatises about Vietnam in the collectanea Xiao fang hu zhai yu di cong chao.
