Course objectives
Introduction to the study of the medieval region of Svanety (Georgia): history and historiography, Architecture and decoration, Aniconism. The course will be taught as a block lecture in situ from cc. 15.09 to 22.09.2024.
Learning outcomes
Student will be able to: • - Identify and summarize important features of the major moments of the history of Svanety; • - undestand and critically analyze historiography and concepts related to this environment; • - produce an analytical study of selected artifacts;

  • Introduction: the Svans, the Georgians and their art - a historiography of a region built on the past. • Svanety through the eyes of 19th century travellers • Museum in Uzhguli • Museum in Mestia • Svanety in the 10th century • Svanety at the time of the greatest glory of the Georgian kingdom • Nakipari • Lagurka • Lamariam • Svanety in the period of the USSR
