- Course objectives
- Subject and hydrobiology in water management practice, history of applied hydrobiology, laws and guidelines regulations. Man activities and biological processes in surface inland waters; hydrological regime of streams - water outtake and derived water power station, ecological minimum discharge; water constructions - longitudinal and cross section regulations, weirs and dams, river discontinuum concept and hydropower peaking; restoration and revitalization of water ecosystems; water pollution - global (nonpoint) pollution (acidification, eutrophization, persistent organic and inorganic pollutants, radioactive isotopes); local and regional pollution (heat pollution, classifications of wastewater, selfpurification ability of inland water). Biological indicators of water quality; bioindication of natural status of inland waters (water hardness, contents of calcium, magnesium, iron, manganese, silica), bioindication of acidification; base principles of biomonitoring; bioindication of sewage pollution of surface water - sabrobic system, Trent Index, BMWP, BBI and score indexes, IBI and ISI systems, ecoregional approach and RIVPACS methods; indication of eutrophication of surface water. Biomonitoring of xenobiotics - bioconcetration, bioaccumulation, biotrasformation, biomagnification; testing methods - kit methods and Microtox, acute toxicity, subchronic and chronic toxicity (micro- and mesocosmos studies). Biological treatment of wastewater; base principles; natural methods - irradiation, biological ponds and vegetative wastewater treatment; aerobic methods of wastewater treatment; anaerobic methods of wastewater treatment. Chemical and physical methods of waste water treatment. Water works hydrobiology; chemistry, microbiology and biology of drinking water, taste and odors caused by algae, source of drinking waters, reservoirs - biological characteristics and base principles of biological management and monitoring. Hydrobiology and fisheries (fish husbandry). Hygienic aspects of human impact. Introduction to production biology of inland water - primary and secondary production of standing and runningwaters.
