Course objectives
The students attend the course Fyziologie II at the Faculty of Medicine, Masaryk University, as a follow up of the course Fyziologie I. The goal of Physiology is to explain how the human organism works, from molecular interactions to organ systems and their regulation.
Learning outcomes
At the end of this course the students should be able to: define basic concepts of general and systematic physiology;
explain basic physiological principles;
describe the functions of all organs systems;
explain the basic types of regulation in the human organism.
Syllabus
  • Skeletal, smooth and heart muscle. Respiratory functions. Pulmonary mechanics. Gas transport. Respiration under various physiological conditions. Regulation of respiration. Functional morphology of the kidney. Clearance. Counter-current system. Regulation of kidney functions. Metabolism of sacharides, lipids and proteins. Energy metabolism. Vitamins, minerals and water in nutrition. GIT - mechanical functions. GIT – secretory functions. GIT - resorption and other functions. Coordination in GIT. Regulation of food intake. Physiology of the heart. Conduction system. Cardiac electrophysiology. Electromechanical coupling. Electrocardiography. Arrhythmias. Cardiac mechanics. Heart cycle. Heart failure. Regulation of blood circulation, blood pressure. Variability of circulatory parameters. Rheology of the blood. Microcirculation. Circulatory failure. Regulation of blood flow. Coronary circulation. Regional circulation (pulmonary, skin, muscle, cerebral, splanchnic, renal, fetal). Circulatory reactions. Thermoregulation. Physiology of exercise. Physiology of adaptation. Theoretical preparation in form of lectures.
Assessment methods
The basic theoretical knowledge is tested on regular basis in the course Human physiology II - practical training. The course is concluded with an oral exam.

The schedule of lecture topics is posted on the notice board of the Institute of Physiology and in the MUNI information system - study materials - organizational instructions. Specification for the final exam: The final exam in Physiology is performed as an oral exam, the student must attend the exam in person. The student registers for the exam via IS MUNI according to the announced dates. The time of the exam is listed only indicatively, the student will receive a letter by e-mail at least 1 day before the registered date specifying the time when he or she is to come to the exam. Bring an identity document (ID, passport, ISIC). At the beginning, 2 questions are drawn to the student using the IS MUNI (random number generator) (according to the list of questions entered into the IS MUNI no later than 3 weeks after the beginning of the spring semester), the student answers without written preparation, the order of questions for answering can be chosen. The total time of examination is estimated at approximately 25 minutes. If the answer to any question is not sufficient, the exam will be graded "unsatisfactory (F)" and the examination will be terminated. Any absence from the examination term must be excused via the Study Department of the Faculty of Medicine MU within 5 working days of the examination date. Apologies addressed to teachers of the Department of Physiology of the Faculty of Medicine MU will not be taken into account. If a student fails to attend the examination and does not properly excuse his/her absence, he/she will be assessed as "unsatisfactory (-)" (SZŘ, Article 16, Par. 7).
