- Basic knowledge of general chemistry. Writing chemical equations, stoichiometric calculations, and calculations of solution concentration and mixing.

- Course objectives
- At the end of this course, students should be able to: practise basic laboratory operations (filtration, crystallization, distillation, extraction, sublimation, volumetric methods); use basic methods of determination of physicochemical constants of compounds; apply basic chemistry calculations in laboratory praxis.
- Syllabus
- 1. Introduction, laboratory and equipment, guidelines for lab work and writing reports, safety rules. Pass-requirements. Chemicals. Gas cylinders. Laboratory glassware and ceramics. Metal, plastic, paper. Heating, cooling, stirring. Simple distillation, fractional distillation. 2. Pressure measurements, sources of vacuum. Rectification, vacuum distillation, sublimation, drying, extraction, thin layer chromatography. Measurement, precision, accuracy, significant figures. Gas and liquid volume measurements. Balances and weighing. Density, refractive index, melting point. 3. Glass-blowing exercise, demonstration of glassblower work, work on glassblower burner and Bunsen burner. 4. Filtration, vacuum filtration, distillation, liquid volume measurements, pipette, burette, preparation of a solution with precise concentration, concentration calculations. 5. Vacuum distillation, rectification, Soxhlet extraction, sublimation. Melting point, refractive index. Rotary evaporator. Heating under reflux. 6. Separation of the KAl(SO4)2.12H2O + CuSO4.5H2O + Cr2O3 mixture. 7. Distillation of HCl.

- In-term tests to check an understanding of each completed laboratory exercise and related principles and calculations (stoichiometry, concentrations, titrations). Laboratory reports on all exercises. Final written test.
