Supplier department: Department of Biochemistry – Chemistry Section – Faculty of Science - Prerequisites
- Completion of the course Biochemistry I
- Course Enrolment Limitations
- The course is offered to students of any study field.
- Course objectives
- By the end of the course, students should be able to understand and explain: Basic catabolic and anabolic pathways. Glycolysis, citric acid cycle, respiration. Synthesis and degradation of amino acids, fatty acids, proteins, and carbohydrates. Photosynthesis. Regulation of metabolic pathways. Physiological processes and their biochemical nature. Basic properties of compounds important in biochemistry and methodological approaches to the study and analytical application of enzymes.
- Learning outcomes
- The student will be able to - Perform basic laboratory procedures in the biochemistry laboratory - Operate common laboratory equipment used in the biochemistry laboratory - Evaluate measured data mathematically - Interpret the simple results of their work
- Syllabus
- Quantitative protein determination. Methods of separation. Determination of enzyme activity. pH effect on enzyme reaction. Enzyme kinetics and enzyme inhibition. Enzymatic determination of metabolites. Substrate specificity of enzymes. Imobilisation of enzymes.
- Teaching methods
- Laboratory courses
- Assessment methods
- The first exercise is dedicated to learning about safety in a biochemical laboratory. Students also write the entrance test, the successful completion of which is a prerequisite for participation in the exercise. Before each subsequent exercise there is a written test to check the student's preparation for the task. In all tests, including the entrance test, the student must answer at least 50% of the questions correctly.
- Language of instruction
- English
- Teacher's information
- The student must complete all assignments. Preparation for the assignment, the actual lab work, and protocols are evaluated summatively.
