Course objectives
At the end of the course students should be able to understand and explain - Structure of Living Matter. Composition and Organization of Cells. Basic Classes of Biomolecules: Amino Acids and Proteins, Sugars and Polysaccharides, Nucleic Acids, Lipids and Membranes. General Features of Metabolism. Energetics of Biochemical Reactions. Enzymes and Coenzymes.
Learning outcomes
After completing the course, student will have deep knowledge and understanding of basic biochemical processes. He will be qualified to explain biochemical curriculum to the high school students.
Syllabus
  • 1. Introduction. Composition of living matter, hierarchy of structures. Biogenic elements. Important functional groups. Amino acids, their properties. Proteinogenic amino acids, free amino acids. Analysis of amino acids.
  • 2. Peptides, origin, nomenclature. Sequence and its determination. Biochemically significant peptides. Protein structure, conformation and its changes. Methods of studying proteins. Fibrillar, transport, signalling and protective proteins. Structure, properties, function, representatives. Immunoglobulins. Practical aspects.
  • 3. Carbohydrates. General properties, distribution of monosaccharides. Derivatives. Free monosaccharides. Glycosides, di-, oligo- and polysaccharides. Distribution, structure and function in organisms. Glycoproteins and proteoglycans.
  • 4. Lipids. Composition, properties, distribution and function. Practical aspects - fats. Structure and importance of biomembranes. Isoprenoids.
  • 5. Nucleic acids. Composition and structure of DNA and RNA, properties, methods of study.
  • 6. Enzymes, their structure, properties, distribution and nomenclature. Rate of enzyme reactions, activity, conditions. Enzyme kinetics.
  • 7. General features of transformation of substances in living systems. Catabolism and anabolism. Glycolysis, reaction scheme, energetics, regulation. Gluconeogenesis. Other carbohydrate transformations (Cori cycle, alanine cycle). Pentose phosphate cycle.
  • 8. Tricarboxylic acid cycle. Reaction scheme, energetics. Biosynthetic significance, regulation. Protein catabolism. Digestion. General transformations of amino acids. Nitrogen metabolism. Glyoxylate cycle.
  • 9. Lipid metabolism. Degradation and biosynthesis of fats and phosphatides. Degradation and biosynthesis of fatty acids. Ketonic substances.
  • 10. Respiratory chain. Organization of the respiratory chain, proton motive force, formation of ATP (oxidative phosphorylation). Photosynthesis. Light and dark phases of photosynthesis, pigments, electron transfer and ATP formation. CO2 fixation (Calvin cycle).
  • 11. Structure and importance of biomembranes. Membrane transport, passive and active transport.
  • 12. Regulation of metabolism. Cell signalling. Mechanism of action of hormones. Regulation of ATP metabolism.
