Course objectives
The aim of the course is to familiarize students with the possibilities of preparation and realization of student experiments with simple or improvised tools. On a number of concrete realizations to strengthen manual dexterity in simple production techniques: cutting and machining of material, soldering, gluing..., basics of production from paper, wood, plastic, metal, glass. Sharing information on how to obtain input materials or raw materials. Overview of available methodologies. Encouragement to produce and be creative. All items produced will be available for the student to take away for future use in their own teaching. The aim of the course is to introduce students to the possibilities of preparing and carrying out student experiments with simple or improvised tools. A number of concrete realizations are used to strengthen manual dexterity in simple production techniques: cutting and machining of materials, soldering, gluing..., basics of production from paper, wood, plastic, metal, glass.
Sharing information on how to obtain input materials or raw materials.
Overview of available methodologies.
Encouragement to  produce and be creative.

All items produced will be available for the student to take away for future use in their own teaching.
Learning outcomes
Upon completion of the course, the student will be able to:
design and prepare simple student experiments,
to produce the necessary tools,
orient themselves to the availability of input materials,
apply basic student experimental methodologies.
The student will be able to take the produced tools away for use in his/her own teaching practice.
Syllabus
  • Processing of materials and simple products from paper, plastic foils and tubes, wood, glass, metal. (e.g., simple spectroscope, polarimeter, pinhole chamber, holders, elements for optical board, models of chemical compounds, improvised electronic circuits, simple motor, compass, pressure gauge, hygrometer ....).
  • Improvised ways of carrying out selected experiments (e.g., measuring g from  free fall, pendulum analysis, experiments with  gravity, hydraulic press, galvanic cell, NaCl single crystal growth, experiments in  electrostatics ....)
  • The mobile phone as a measuring instrument.
  • Soldering technique.
  • Students will be able to influence the choice of specific topics.
Teaching methods
Practical work in the laboratory/workshop.
Assessment methods
Active work in the laboratory. Self-presentation of a selected student experiment.
A minimum of 80% participation is required for credit.
Language of instruction
