B2 (upper-intermediate) level is the minimum knowledge requirement for students to enter this course; plus basic experience in academic writing and enthusiasm to discuss different issues tackled in classes.

Course objectives
The aim of the course is to engage students in a variety of activities which will develop students´ own writing style based on a study of examples (namely, structures and typical features of an abstract, scientific article and possibly other written genres, in case of need and interest. Course participants will also be required to deliver a presentation on a selected topic, which will be assessed and discussed in class, and will be acquainted with basics of corpus linguistics.
Syllabus
  • While exploring the following selected areas, the students will study the aspects of academic writing in English: 1) general characterics and variety of genres, 2) detailed structure of an abstract, 3) detailed stucture of a scientific article; upon request other written genres may be tackled. Each course participant will give an in-class oral presentation and his/her written performance will be commented upon by the tutors during the course. This will happen in 6 two-session teaching days distributed throughout the semester between end-February and end-April 2013.
