Osnova
  • OVERVIEW OF POPs RESEARCH AT THE AIR QUALITY RESEARCH BRANCH (1 hr) Introduction of the long-term research of air quality in the Environment Canada which is focused on the legacy of POPs, emerging chemicals, currently used pesticides (CUPs) and products of combustion. CHEMICAL TRACERS OF BIOGEOCHEMICAL PROCESSES (3 hrs) Proportions of chemical constituents are often used as tracers of sources and environmental processes. These "markers" include enantiomers, isomers, parent-metabolite pairs and stable isotopes. This series begins with an introduction to chirality and analytical methods for chiral compounds, and continues with environmental applications of enantiomers and other chemical tracers. CASE STUDIES FOR SELECTED CHEMICALS POPs in temperate and subtropical North America (2 hrs) Most organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) have been banned throughout North America, but the dates of withdrawal from the market vary. Mexico continued to use OCPs longer than Canada or the U.S.; DDT was eliminated in 2000 and chlordane in 2003. Several modern insecticides, herbicides and fungicides are chiral, and recent work on their analytical-environmental chemistry is presented. Polychlorinated naphthalenes (PCNs) are a group of chemicals of emerging concern, and insights to their sources and occurrence in air are discussed. Present-day sources of OCPs in North America Recent usage vs. evaporation of old residues from agricultural soils. Temporal trends of OCPs in the air of the Great Lakes region Loading pathways to the lakes Recent studies with CUPs The puzzles of PCNs Arctic contaminants (2 hrs) Sources and pathways of chemicals to the Arctic are described, including OCPs, PCNs and CUPs. Special attention is given to using hexachlorocyclohexanes (HCHs) to follow water transport pathways and air-water exchange in the Arctic Ocean.
