Course objectives
After completing this course the student will be able to:

understand authentic mathematical texts/lectures
identify the main ideas
formulate the main ideas
interpret the information
discuss about general and mathematical topics
present simple mathematical topics using basic presentation techniques
summarize a simple mathematical text
classify
compare and contrast
identify causes and effects
describe a process
apply acquired skills to new topics
Syllabus
  • Syllabus of the course: Texts from mathematics and other related fields according to current importance and interest (requisite vocab) General math texts (requisite vocab) Open courseware lecture materials and video lectures predominantly from MIT. VOA Special English audio recodings designed for ESL students

Teaching methods
Listening exercises from audio and video sources with accompanying questions and ensuing discussion, reading comprehension of written texts dealing with popular science themes as well as specific scientific texts, translations into Czech language, development of curricula, formal letter writing, exercises in basic grammar within scientific content and style, analysis of word structure, word derivation, expansion of casual as well as scientific vocabulary, Latin roots of words, casual and scientific conversation.
Assessment methods
Seminar attendance is compulsory. Each course is concluded with a credit test. The passing grade of the credit test is 60%.
