It is required to visit Ecotoxicology of microorganisms parallely - Course Enrolment Limitations
- The course is also offered to the students of the fields other than those the course is directly associated with.
- fields of study / plans the course is directly associated with
- General Biology (programme PřF, B-BI, specialization Ekotoxikology)
- Special Biology (programme PřF, B-EXB)
- Special Biology (programme PřF, B-EXB, specialization Ecotoxicology)
- Course objectives
- This course comprises from laboratory exercises. At the end, students should be able to:
- measure and evaluate main soil microbial parameters - microbial biomass and its activities: basal respiration, substrate induced respiration, potential ammonification, potential nitrification
- compute and interpret combined eco-physiological indices
- compare the results for soil with different effects of contamination
- explain observed differences
- judge overall changes of soil biological quality caused by contamination
- work in team in the laboratory and generate together report from the exercises - Syllabus
- During week laboratory course, students will measure range of microbial parameters for soil contaminated with cadmium at two concentrations. At the end they compare these results with un-contaminated soil and interpret the influece of cadmium.
- During the exercises, students will measure:
- - microbial biomass with fumigation - extraction method
- - basal and substrate induced respiration using gas chromatograph
- - potential ammonification and nitrification
- Literature
- Teaching methods
- Laboratory exercises running as almost independent laboratory work of students controlled and supervised by lecturer. Attendance in experimental work is mandatory. Work in the laboratory follows exact rules (manual to exercises) given by lecturer at the course beginning. Students work in teams and generate together also final reports.
- Assessment methods
- For credits it is mandatory: 1) be present in the course, 2) be activelly participating during the laboratory work, 3) provide final protocols (reports) containing overview of the methods used, gained results (measured and calculated indices), interpretation of the results.
