Course objectives
Main objectives of the course are: - to apply the basic knowledge about molecular mechanism of development onto specific developmental process - to learn and discuss how developmental biology contributes to disease treatment and regenerative medicine Student passing this course will be able to apply the knowledge of molecular mechanisms controlling animal development into associated fields such as regenerative, reproductive and oncology-related medicine.
Syllabus
  • 1. Summary of basic findings and information from „Animal developmental physiology I“ 2. Morphogenesis – cell adhesion, gastrulation, neural crest formation, cell migration. Cell differentiation: universal and tissue-specific regulators, external signals, chemical and structural modification of DNA. 3. Development of nervous system – general features, main cell types, anterior-posterior patterning of neural tube, dorsal-ventral patterning of neural tube, development of neurons and glia 4. Development of selected mesodermal organs (muscle, bone, cartilage): somite and muscle development, cartilage and bone development, development of limb. Developmental defects. 5. Development of endodermal organs: endoderm determination, pancreas. 6. Development of blood and immune system. Molecular mechanisms and defects -various types of leukemia. 7. Stem cells. Importance for development and tissue homeostasis. Relation to tumor-formation and metastasis. Embryonal and cancer stem cells. 8. Activation of developmental mechanisms in the adult. Activation in regeneration and tumor process. Molecular mechanisms regulating development activated in tumors. 9. Developmental processes in regenerative medicine. Targeted differentiation and stem cell transplantation. The current status – possibilities, limitations and hopes. 10. , 11. External speakers.
