Course objectives
Course follows courses Statistical methods and data processing and Method of geographical research. Students will be acquainted with past and present spatial social-economic information, which can be used in regional geographic research. Emphasis will be put on issues of data comparability, their territorial detail including accessibility, objectivity and representativeness. In seminar students will be acquainted with techniques of processing of spatial social-economic information including methods of multivariate analysis and with techniques of sample surveys.
Learning outcomes
Students completing the course will be able to:
- identify basic spatial data sources for individual thematic areas,
- realize a basic spatial data analysis on the example of a particular region,
- describe the limitations and (un)suitability of data sources and indicators.
Syllabus
  • 1. Domestic and foreign statistical institutions and databases (CZSO, Eurostat, UN agencies, ...)
  • 2. History of census with emphasis on censuses in 1991, 2001 and 2011
  • 3. Data about population structure (according to sex, age, religion, nationality, highest level of education attained,
  • 4. Population changes (natural growth, migration) and commuting to work and schools
  • 5. Economy (GDP, economic activity) and data about agriculture and forestry (Agricultural census, land use, ...)
  • 6. Industry and construction - the number of employees in companies, industrial zones and brownfields, foreign direct investment and investment incentives
  • 7. Data about non-productive sphere - retail, education, healthcare, social security, ...
  • 8. Labour Market - Integrated Portal MLSA, Labour Force Survey, GIS spatial analysis
  • 9. Houses and flats - construction and amenities, Regional facilities
  • 10. Transport geographic information and their processing

Teaching methods
Lectures let the students know of sources of spatial social-economic information and examples of its use in the regional geographical research. Seminars takes place in the computer room and they are concerned with model areas cases.
Assessment methods
Evaluation of the entire course consists of two parts:
I. Exercise - elaboration of individual exercises (weight: 25% of total marks),
II. Written test (weight: 75% of the total marks).
Corresponding attendance and gain at least 50 % of the points for drafting exercise is necessary for granting credit for exercise.
