Prerequisites
Basic knowledge of chemistry and conservation of artifacts made of organic materials, especially paper, textile, and collagenic materials.
Course Enrolment Limitations
The course is also offered to the students of the fields other than those the course is directly associated with.
fields of study / plans the course is directly associated with
Course objectives
The practical laboratory exercise focuses on the basic principles, procedures, and methods used to conserve and restore objects made from organic materials (paper, and collagenic materials). It includes the fundamentals of production and technology and professional terminology. It is focused on technological surveys of objects and analyses of materials, which are the basis for the choice of subsequent procedures for conservation and restoration interventions. The basics of practical conservation are excluded.
Learning outcomes
Passing the course students will gain knowledge and practical skills of cultural heritage artefacts made of organic materials in the view of:
1) features and chemistry of the materials (collagenic materials, paper, textile)
2) ways of their damage and degradation
3) possibilities of their research
4) methods of their protection and conservation/restoration
