Course objectives
Course gives complex overview of ecosystem ecotoxicology. At the end of this course, students should be able to:
- describe the problematics of chemical substances influence on terrestrial ecosystems
- explain basic processes in the ecosystems from the viewpoint of toxic compounds
- identify potential sensitive targets after application of toxicants
- classify ecological factors, which influence the ecosystem
- interprete data measured in routine monitoring
- suggest basic methodology for the research of individual ecotoxicological problems
Syllabus
  • Introduction to terrestrial ecotoxicology.
  • Basic ecological principles. Ecosystem as model system. taxonomy and description of ecosystems.
  • Methodology of ecotoxicological research. Contaminants in ecosystems.
  • Entrance and behaviour of polutants in ecosystems. Fate and output from ecosystem. Fotolysis. Biodegradation. Transport mechanisms.
  • Ecosystem under influence of polutants. Influence on ecosystem structure and energetical balance. Influence on matter cycling (C, N).
  • Influence of contaminants on ecosystem regulation and evolution.
  • Practical aspects of risk analysis in terrestrial ecosystems.
  • Diagnosis, ecological risk assessment, bioindication.
  • Prospective risk analysis, influence of compounds with chronic effects.
  • Therapy,decontamination, technological aspects.
