Course objectives
Main objectives can be summarized as follows: to learn the geographical position, characteristics and diferentiation of Africa and Australia continents and islands of the Pacifics. Physical geography - lecture of M. Culek, human geography -lecture of A. Veznik; to explain special and typical problems of nature, human history and economics in selected territories; Students will enlarge their regional knowledges, knowledges of special problems of these territories and will have opportunities for using of their present day geographical knowledges.

  • 1. Introduction. Africa - basic geographical features, geological development and structures.
  • 2. Basic geomorphological features of Africa.
  • 3. Climate, climatic regions, hydrography, coastline waters of Africa.
  • 4. Soils, Biota, landscape ecological problems, Nature protection.
  • 5. Historical and political development of Africa, Inhabitants and settlments in Africa.
  • 6. Agriculture and food. Raw materials and their output in Africa.
  • 7. Industry and industrialization, transport, foreign trade, recreation.
  • 8. Komplex geographical characteristics of macroregions in Africa.
  • 9. Australia and Oceania - basic geographical features, geological and geomorphological development and structures.
  • 10. Climate, climatic regions, hydrography, coastline waters of Australia nad Oceania.
  • 11. Soils, Biota, landscape ecological problems, Nature protection.
  • 12. Historical and political development, Inhabitants and settlments in Australia and Oceania.
  • 13. Agriculture. Industry, Transport and Foreign Trade in Australia and Oceania, recreation.

Teaching methods
Lectures consist of powerpoint presentations with wide use of pictures. The basic Teaching methods are lectures, supplemented about contemporary methods. The course consists also of homeworks of students concerning the actual problems.
Assessment methods
Written tests from the Physical Geography and oral exam from Human geography of territories under study. For the course credit is powerpoint presentation of selected problems of the regions in class exercise required. It gives cca 20 % of the final examination. Two written short tests will take place in the second half of the semester; their evaluation will give cca 10% of the final mark. The exam is necessary to fullfil at least on "E" examination anyway - both in its physical-geographical and human-geographical parts.
