- After completing this course the student will be able to:
understand authentic texts/lectures on Earth science
identify the main ideas
formulate the main ideas
summarize a scientific/earth science text
interpret the information from the text/lecture
use terminology of the course topics
define the terms of the course topics
classify features
describe tables and graphs
characterize fresh water and ocean water worlds
explain causes and effects
compare and contrast using the proper linking
present the topics of the course using basic presentation techniques
discuss one´s plans for future studies and trips
apply acquired skills in academic English to new topics - Syllabus
- Academic vocabulary, language functions and field topics:
- Water and ancient civilizations
- FRESH WATER – introduction, water cycle
- Water on the Ground - Water collects on the ground; Water runs off the ground
- Water in the Ground - Water soaks into the ground; Porosity and permeability; Zones of water in the ground; Water comes out of the ground – aquifers, geysers and hot springs
- OCEAN WATER and Oceanography:

- foreign language course:; text analysis; reading/listening comprehension exercises; pronunciation and grammar exercises; field and academic vocabulary exercises; presentations using basic presentation technique and discussion; terminology, useful vocabulary and definitions support - blended learning (interactive materials in IS MU, drill in IS MU)
- Assessment methods
- 6 interactive tests on terms and reading comprehension, 2 written revision tests, written assignments, one presentation and a credit test. 80% attendance in the seminars is required.
