Course objectives
The course follows the basic lectures of qualitative methodology. The aim is to improve the methodical competence of students to be able to perform a qualitative analysis of text documents and write a scientific paper. The course will focus on methods of transcription, coding and analysis of text documents (interviews, reports, strategies, communications, etc.). Students become familiar with techniques of interpretative phenomenological analysis, grounded theory, narrative analysis and discourse analysis.
Syllabus
  • Curriculum is divided into four successive blocks:
  • I. block: transcript; 1. what is the transcript; 2. various types of transcription (verbatim transcript, annotated transcript, etc.); 3. how correctly transcribe the interview;
  • II. block: coding; 4. what is the code and what are its functions; 5. first reading, writing comments, code names; 6. the relationship between the research question and the various codes; interrelations between the codes;
  • III. block: analysis; 7. interpretative phenomenological analysis (IPA); 8. grounded theory method (GTM); 9. narrative analysis; 10. discourse analysis;
  • VI. block: article; 11. methodological chapter; 12. empirical chapter; 13. specifics of writing a qualitative article.

Teaching methods
Teaching methods - lectures, reading scientific literature, analysis of texts, analytic work on real empirical data.
Assessment methods
Colloquium (oral) tests ability to use qualitative technics if geographical research. Emphasis is placed on testing the ability of students to independent analytical work with concrete data.
