Course objectives
Main objectives can be summarized as follows: to understand the basic interaction between humans and nature in landscape ecosystems understood as capital providing services for people and biota to learn the practical applications of sustainability in regional policy to analyze the impact of human activities upon physical landscapes to elaborate the ways of balance between nature protection/conservation and human needs to delineate the principals of precautionality, inter-generation and actual responsibility to assess relations of economy, society, culture, politics, ecology and technology in urban/rural communities
Learning outcomes
Learning outcomes of the course unit: To understand the basic international and Czech documents dealing with sustainability, to critically assess the state of implementation of the sustainability policy in the Svitavy Basin, to analyze the natural components of landscape and human activities in the selected catchments of the Svitava-river, to gather field knowledge of natural, economic, human and social capital of the selected river basin for proposals of landscape ecosystem services, to compare the practice of sustainability in the studied river basins with similarly large cvatchments of the river Dyje, to creatively propose on the basis of analysis and interpretation the measures and objectives of sustainability changes carrying out the objectives of the strategic framework of the CR 2030
Syllabus
  • What is sustainability? Fundamental concept in Millennium Ecosystems Assessment, CICES (The Common International Classification of Ecosystem Services), UNO: sustainable development goals (2015) Regional Development Strategy of the Czech Republic 2014-2020, Strategic Framework of the Czech Republic 2030 (Office of the Government of the Czech Republic, Department for Sustainable Development, 2016), Framework and suggested indicators to measure sustainable development (OECD, 2013). People and Society - family and community, work, inequality, education, health, culture. Economic model - introduction, economic institutions, research / development / innovations, resource management, infrastructure, public finance system. Resilient ecosystems of landscape and ecosystem services, biotic diversity, water in the landscape, soil management. Municipalities and Regions - (sub) urbanization and increasing spatial mobility, regional inequalities, increasing the importance of non-state actors and community development, territorial public administration competences for sustainable settlement development, adaptation of settlements to climate change. Global development - a global environment supporting sustainable development, policy coherence. Good governance - introduction, long-term efficiency of governance. Indicators for specific objectives of the Strategic framework Czech Republic 2030. Regional and local strategies, programs and sustainability projects. Field identification, GIS application, documentation Local Agenda 21, regional policy, negotiation, EIA and SEA. In seminars the attainment targets will be applied to 20 selected sub-basins of the Svitava river, both by studying available official, unofficial and imaginative information sources with their subsequent interpretation and follow-up field study based on the knowledge base of physical and human geography disciplines. In field studies it is necessary to fully respect the rules of safety and ethics of work formulated by the Geographical Institute of the Faculty of Science.
