- Course objectives
- The aim of JAB01 course is:
-to raise students‘ awareness of practices in an English-speaking academic environment (internationalization)
-to raise students‘ awareness of modern trends and practices among members of specific discourse communities (introducing language in the context of typical genres, practising those genres)
-to show the divergence between English for Science and Technology and English for other academic purposes (e.g. when employing numerical values in written texts)
-to practise and extend academic vocabulary and basic specialized vocabulary in biological context (experiments; taxonomy; animals: habitats, ways of reproduction, behaviour; plants: morphology, reproduction, photosynthesis; bacteria and viruses; animal and plant cells)
-to practise language skills and functions typical for natural sciences (e.g. process description, classification, comparing/contrasting, etc.), which the students will be able to apply to a narrower/more specific context of their specializations (transferrable skills)
-to practise academic skills, e.g.: note-taking from a lecture, identifying and formulating main ideas, identifying specific information, text summary, interpretation of information, speaking in public about biology-related topics, describing a picture as a visual aid - Learning outcomes
- After completing this course the student will be able to:
-talk about their studies and present an affiliated academic institution
-employ numerical values in a scientific academic text
-describe laboratory equipment and laboratory setting for a specific experiment, describe the experiment (its purpose, materials, method, result and conclusion)
-use various ways of classification in a biological context (e.g.: taxonomy vs DNA analysis)
-deliver a group presentation on a biological topic
-describe biological processes (e.g.: plant life cycle, photosynthesis, plant fertilization)
-analyse two biological phenomena/types of organisms, describe their similarities and differences
-write a short academic text with emphasis on its correct organisation, use of functional language and specialized vocabulary

- Grammar: present tenses revision, future tenses revision, forming questions, countable-uncountable nouns, group nouns, quantifiers,adverbs of frequency, adverbs of place, adjectives and nouns - word formation, verb + preposition patterns, nouns with irregular plural (nucleus-nuclei, mitochondrion-mitochondria, etc), nouns with the same singular and plural (means, offspring, etc), passive voice, so-such (with/without indefinite article)
