Course objectives
The exam assesses the student's ability to
understand specialised texts/discourse
identify key ideas
formulate key ideas
interpret information from both written and spoken texts
discuss general and specialised topics
introduce their field of study (be able to use basic vocabulary related to their field of study)
summarise a simple text related to their field of study
classify, descibe cause and effect, compare, define
Learning outcomes
The exam will assess:
the student’s ability to understand spoken, uncomplicated texts containing factual information, including the ability to grasp the main idea and important details.
the ability to understand the main ideas of uncomplicated factual written texts, identify important specific details, and follow the logical progression and coherence of such texts.
knowledge of specific and academic vocabulary and selected grammatical structures, such as conditional sentences, passive voice, modal verbs, indefinite pronouns, quantifiers, conjunctions, etc.
the ability to communicate in writing in both domestic and international contexts using English, e.g. a course/internship at a foreign institution, collaboration with international students, communication regarding participation in events abroad, and handling arrangements such as accommodation, etc.
Syllabus
  • 1.Written part:
  • listening (filling in specific information)
  • reading (filling in academic/specialised vocabulary; understanding logical connections in the text)
  • grammar and vocabulary (conditional sentences, passive voice, modal verbs, quantifiers, indefinite pronouns, conjunctions, etc.; word formation)
  • writing (a short email responding to a scenario)
  • 2.Oral part (done in pairs):
  • The exam assesses students' ability to communicate in English and to discuss topics related to their field of study with the use of functional language. The students orally summarise a short text and comment / ask questions about each other's text. The texts use the following language functions: 1. Explaning concepts 2. Describing and explaining a process / notion / experiment 3. Comparing and contrasting phenomena 4. Classifying systems 5. Describing a cause and effect relationship

Before enrolling in the JA001 exam, it is recommended to complete the CJV_DIAL course. The purpose of the CJV_DIAL course is to assess your level of English proficiency before registering for the English exams. Completion of Dialang is recommended for all students, and compulsory for first-year bachelor's students. As part of this course, you are required to complete three sections of the online Dialang diagnostic test and record your results in the course ROPOT.

To prepare for the JA001 exam, register for the courses JA..01 (in the autumn semester) and JA..02 (in the spring semester). For more info, see https://cjv.sci.muni.cz/kurzy.

Attending these courses is not compulsory; however, it is strongly recommended as part of your preparation for the exam.
