Basic knowledge of the system of organisms. - Course Enrolment Limitations
- The course is also offered to the students of the fields other than those the course is directly associated with.
- fields of study / plans the course is directly associated with
- there are 6 fields of study the course is directly associated with, display
- Course objectives
- The course presents an overview of cyanobacteria, algae, fungi and similar organisms, based on recently accepted classification. The students are introduced into their phylogenetic relations, important groups and their representatives.
- Learning outcomes
- At the end of this course (in the case of successful finishing) students should be able to:
classify particular taxa of described organisms in natural system;
characterize particular groups, describe their characters and life processes;
understand evolutionary consequences among particular groups. - Syllabus
- Basic survey of the groups of organisms, assessment of phylogenetic relations. Taxonomic units, methods of classification.
- Prokaryota: classification of cyanobacteria in recent system. Eukaryota: endosymbiotic origin of the semiautonomous organelles. Overview of the whole system of eucaryotic organisms, division to kingdoms, relationships.
- Survey of the particular divisions of cyanobacteria algae, fungi and "fungi-like organisms", their classification on lower levels: classes and orders. Basic characteristics, their function in the ecosystems, their importance. Recent opinions to the position of the mentioned groups in the system of all organisms (different kingdoms).
- 1. Cyanobacteria.
- 2. isolated groups of unicellular algae: Chlorarachniophyta, Euglenophyta.
- 3. isolated autotrophic groups of kingdom Chromalveolata: Dinophyta, Cryptophyta, Haptophyta.
- 4. autotrophic Chromalveolata (continued): Heterokontophyta (Chrysophyceae, Synurophyceae, Xanthophyceae, Bacillariophyceae, Phaeophyceae).
- 5. phylogenetic basis of kingdom Plantae, subkingdom Biliphytae: Glaucophyta, Rhodophyta.
- 6. Plantae, subkingdom Viridiplantae, clade Chlorophytae: Chlorophyta (Prasinophyceae, Ulvophyceae and related classes, Trebouxiophyceae, Chlorophyceae).
- 7. Plantae, subkingdom Viridiplantae, clade Streptophytae: Charophyta (Klebsormidiophyceae, Charophyceae and related classes, Zygnematophyceae).
- 8. kingdom Amoebozoa: Mycetozoa, isolated groups of similar ameboid organisms: Acrasida, Plasmodiophorida.
- 9. heterotrophic Chromalveolata: Labyrinthulomycota, Peronosporomycota (Oomycota), Hyphochytriomycota.
- 10. kingdom Opisthokonta, phylogenetic basis of subkingdom Fungi: Chytridiomycota, Blastocladiomycota.
- 11. Fungi (continued): basic characteristics of "eumycetous fungi", Zygomycota, Glomeromycota.
- 12. Fungi (continued): Ascomycota (Taphrinomycotina, Saccharomycotina, Pezizomycotina).
- 13. Fungi (continued): artificial groups Deuteromycota and Lichenes.
- 14. Fungi (continued): Basidiomycota (Pucciniomycotina, Ustilaginomycotina, Agaricomycotina).
