Course objectives
Many students at our algological group are conducting their research in the field of diatomology, this subject should help them to understand the phylogeny and ecology of diatoms, teaches them the important morphological terms describing the diatom frustule, which are extremely important to distinguish the diatom species. In this course we focus on the main genera within all groups of diatoms (araphid, centric, monoraphid, biraphid and asymmetrical diatoms). Last but not least two lessons are devoted to the use of algae in monitoring and bio indication.
Learning outcomes
At the end of the course students should be able to: explain basic morphological terms (valve, raphe, central pores, axial area, costae, stiae), understand the most crucial identification features of diatoms, work with information on bioindication, diversity and autoecology and understand important field and laboratory methods used in diatomology.
