Course objectives
Field practice near Brancouze (Jihlava district), in the surroundigs of Brno and in the area of southern Moravia. Identification of invertebrates and vertebrates under natural conditions. Diagnostic characters of dominant species and their immature stages, ecological and trophic relations.
Learning outcomes
At the end of course student will: - be able to identify aquatic and terrestrial invertebrates and vertebrates (including bird voices identification) - have knowledge about their biology - be able to classify taxa into phylogenetic system
Syllabus
  • Field practice in different ecosystems, terrestrial and aquatic fauna, species confined to soil, standing and running waters, vegetation and special ecosystems. Besic information about species and their bionomy as well as ecology. Organisation of species into communities, interspecific relations.
  • Identification of invertebrate and vertebrate species in situ followed by precise identification in "laboratory" using special identification keys. Interactive internet handbook for aquatic and terrestrial invertebrates is available.

Teacher's information
The colloquium consists of three parts - terrestrial invertebrates, aquatic invertebrates and vertebrates - and it takes place on the afternoon of the fourth day of field practice. It is necessary to successfully pass all three parts. If one of these parts is not passed, students have the opportunity to repeat it the next day in the morning (the day of departure).
