- Course objectives
- Laboratory simulation of the processes that control chemical behavior of organic compounds in environment is often desirable for a deeper understanding, and for determination of basic characteristics required for successful environmental modeling. The goal of this course is to transfer the theoretical knowledge of the fate of chemicals in the environment and phase interfaces obtained in lectures from Environmental Chemistry to the level of practical skills.
- Learning outcomes
- At the end of the course, students should be able to: • transfer the theory on behavior of chemical compounds in the environment and phase-transfer processes learned in the courses of Environmental chemistry to the practical level • design and carry out chemical experiments to explore environmental processes, fate of chemicals and their effects • apply the analytical skills gained in the laboratory course of the Environmental analytical chemistry to more advanced experiments. • interpret the laboratory results from the point of view of the environmental fate • predict the environmental behavior of the chemicals based on their physical-chemical properties determined in the laboratory • develop laboratory skills and principles of good laboratory practice

- 1. Determination of the n-octanol-water partitioning coefficient (KOW) using a shaking flask method and a gas chromatography 2. Adsorption on soil 3. Assessment of the soil-air partitioning coefficient of the chemical substance as a descriptor of the exchange processes between the soil surface and atmosphere 4. Needle as passive air sampler 5. Determination of lipids, polychlorinated biphenyls and organochlorine pesticides in butter 6. Analytical extraction of coffee pesticides and their determination by GC-MS 7. Analytical extraction of pesticides from soil and their determination by LC-MS/MS 8. Determination of perfluorinated substances in water by HPLC-MS/MS 9. Analysis of brominated substances by means of moss
