Course objectives
The aim of this seminar is to support future teachers of mathematics by giving them some concrete algebraic examples to explain the usefulness of mathematics to their pupils/students.
Learning outcomes
After this subject a student will be able to explain some practical algebraic applications to his pupils/students.
Syllabus
  • After explaining the necessary algebraic background we shall discuss some of the following topics:

  • Linear models.
  • Iteration processes: Perron and Frobenius theory for primitive matrices.
  • Graph theory: there are only 5 convex regular polyhedra (the Platon ones).
  • Combinatorics: Burnside's lemma.
  • Infomation concerning the book series "Škola mladých matematiků".
