- Course objectives
- The main objective of the course is to introduce socio-economic changes in the regions of the Czech Republic, which took place after 1989 and have a significant regional impact. The course will focus on the economic aspects of post-socialist transformation (expansion of services in the economy, new development areas, changes in the labor market), in another part of the semester focuses on social and cultural aspects (education, the question of minorities, participation and engagement). Everything is completed case studies of transformation of several Czech regions.
- Learning outcomes
- Student completing the course will be able to:
- identify key changes in the regions of the Czech Republic after 1989,
- demonstrate the ability to study these changes at local and national level,
- combine quantitative and qualitative methods to study these changes,
- demonstrate their skills on the example of a case study. - Syllabus
- 1) Transformation of the Czech economy after 1989, the transition from manufacturing to services
- 2) Effect of major enterprises in regional development
- 3) Development areas (industrial zones, brownfields) and their potential in the economy
- 4) Transformation of the labor market, new forms of employment
- 5) The education of the population as a factor of development, geography of Czech education
- 6) Spatial aspects of technical infrastructure and facilities in the region
- 7) Socially excluded localities, spatiality of social exclusion
- 8) Culture and regional development
- 9) From uniformity to diversity, geography of minorities
- 10) Participation and involvement of local communities (LAG, voluntary associations, micro-partnership of municipalities and cities)
- 11) Media image of Czech regions
- 12) Examples of socioeconomic changes in specific regions of the Czech Republic
