Cíle předmětu
In this course the students will learn how to analyse spectroscopic and photometric data of evolved single and binary stars such as red giants, hot subdwarfs or white dwarfs. The students will be taught the peculiar properties and stellar evolution of those objects and will be introduced to state-of-the-art spectroscopic and photometric analysis methods for single and binary stars. The students will use modern data-mining techniques to select targets from large data archives for spectroscopic and photometric observations. Those stars will then be observed with the telescope on the roof of the institute and other telescopes from collaborating institutes abroad, if possible. The students will actively contribute to ongoing research projects on evolved stars of the working group on Stellar Astrophysics.
Osnova
  • The course will take 10 days which will consist of 2 blocks of 2 hours each for lectures and workshops in the afternoon, followed by observing runs during the night. During the first week we plan a few seminars in which to given an overview of single and binary evolution as a refreshment for the students, in which we also want to present the specific projects that they will be working on. Together with seminars on practical observing (photometry and spectroscopy) and data mining (available archives and tool like topcat ect.) and the start of data reduction. In the second week we will continue with data reduction followed by the analysis of spectra and light curves. The last 2 days we plan no lectures, but allow the students to work on the project they picked while we are present to help them.
Výukové metody
The students will work in groups an will select a specific project on which they want to work (f.x. light curves of HW Vir systems, spectroscopy of Red giants in the 500pc sample) on which they will have to write a report after the course. They thus get to chose if they want to focus on light curves or spectroscopy, but all students have to take part in all lectures so they get the basics of both spectroscopy and light curves.
