- Course objectives
- This course is primarily intended for students of Biology, Biochemistry, Anthropology and students from the RECETOX centre. The objective of this course is to familiarize students with topics that are related to their field of study. Students will work with scientific topics to improve their grammar, enhance their vocabulary and writing skills to be able to communicate in academia. The course is focused on communication skills (discussion, paraphrasing, presentations), on writing skills (academic email, summary), listening comprehension (popular science videos and podcasts) and reading comprehension (popular science/specialised articles).
- Learning outcomes
- At the end of this course, students will be able to: - use scientific vocabulary in context; - apply grammar in a scientific context; - identify key ideas in scientific text; - understand authentic scientific text; - summarise scientific text in speaking and writing; - use language functions, e.g., defining, describing a process, speculating and explaining a cause-and-effect relationship - prepare and present a mini talk using basic presentation skills; - understand authentic speech on a scientific topic; - engage in a discussion on general and specialised topics.

- Teaching methods
- The course is taught in English and employs the following approaches: communicative language teaching, task-based teaching and discovery learning. It is learner-focused and encourages students to practise autonomy, i.e., being responsible for their own learning. The tasks and activities may include: pair/group discussions and debates, mini projects (presentations, practical writing tasks, recordings), games and self-directed grammar and vocabulary work.
- Assessment methods
- Active work in the course, doing homework and 80% seminar attendance are compulsory. Students have to complete credit assignments throughout the semester.
