- Course objectives
- The course aims to provide students with the basic orientation and structure for treating a selected scientific problem, as well as basic methodological procedures and rules for successful scientific publication in scientific journals.
- Learning outcomes
- Upon completion of the course, the student will be able to: - plan, appropriately structure, and prepare scientific text, figures and tables - submit a scientific article to a selected journal, communicate with the publication system and respond to reviewers' comments, - to know about professional journals in cartography, geoinformatics and RS and their suitability for publication on the given topic, - actively work with citation databases.
- Syllabus
- The individual lecture blocks will focus on the issues listed below and will be accompanied by practical demonstrations. The course will be completed with credit. - Bibliographic databases, scientometrics and RIV - WoS, Scopus, Google Scholar, GeoRef, ScienceDirect, GeoscienceWorld and others; CrossLink, doi, open access - is it the future of publishing?, principles of scientometrics, RIV and recognizable outputs; online collection of self-citations - Researcher ID, Scopus ID, ORCID, ResearchGate, Academia.edu and others, - Philosophy and structure of scientific publication - why publish, the specific structure of an article in the field, the role of different parts of a manuscript, special types of articles, - why, how and what to cite, literature review, standard journal abbreviations; rules for ordering citations, bibliographic databases - EndNote, Reference Manager, Mendeley and others; automatic generation of reference lists in the required format, - publishing ethics, intellectual property and plagiarism, - English scientific style - main rules, tips and tricks, logical structure, argumentation, practical procedure of writing a scientific text, most common mistakes and pitfalls in English, - basic types of the publishing process - the work of the editorial board, the role of the editor, the reviewer, the review process, writing a cover letter, the most common reasons for rejection of an article and relevant reactions, preparing a revised manuscript, proofreading, - publishing opportunities in the field at home and abroad.
