Bi2090 - Phylogenesis and diversity of vertebrates - Course Enrolment Limitations
- The course is also offered to the students of the fields other than those the course is directly associated with.
- fields of study / plans the course is directly associated with
- there are 6 fields of study the course is directly associated with, display
- Course objectives
- Synapsid Amniotes and the phylogeny of Mammals, main fossil groups. Morphology, ecology, behaviour, scientific as well as general value of recent mammals. Survey of the world mammalian fauna according to the phylogenetic and molecular taxonomy. Distribution patterns and major ecological and behavioural adaptations of selected (model) species. At the end of this course, students should be able to understand and interpret the status of mammals as the most advanced animal group including the essentials of man as a mammal; make reasoned decisions about the conservation of mammals and their habitats and about the managements to breed mammals (preserves, zoos, laboratories).
- Learning outcomes
- Knowledge of life history of particular mammall phylogenetic lines focused on placental mammals. Morphological, biogeographical, ecological and behavioural charakteristics of recent mammal groups, their evolution, from palentological fossil groups to recent lines and their species diversity. Management, threat and conservation of mammals, autochtonous and allochtonous mammals. Skills. Identification of osteological materiál, especially skulls and dentition, work using vertebrate collection fund of Departmentf Botany and Zoology.
- Syllabus
- Mammalian characteristics and comparison to other vertebrate and chordate animals. Phylogenetic (cladistic) analysis and mammalian taxonomy. Essentials of morphology: skin, hair, mammary glands, skull, axial skeleton, limbs and girdles, muscular system. Mammalian brain, endocrine secretion, neuro-humoral steering. Sense organs, macro- and microsmatic mammals, vision, hearing echo- and hydrolocation. Digestive system, mammalian teeth, tribosphenic molar structure and its evolution, stomach and intestine, herbivore specializations (foregut and hindgut fermenters). Respiratory system, sound production. Mammalian heart, circulatory system, endothermy. Urogenital system, three major types of mammalian reproduction, placental types, pre- and postnatal ontogeny, altricial and precocial young, parent-clingers. Mammalian ecology, niche, major ecological factors. Coping with cold, hypothermia, hibernation and related phenomena. Ecology of reproduction, population ecology, fluctuation in numbers, cycles and overcrowding, r-K selection. Function of mammals in ecosystems, biodiversity, endangerment, conservation of mammals and their habitats. Behaviour, mammals as models in reflexology, behaviorism, classical European ethology, sociobiology and behavioural ecology. Sexual, social and other systems of behaviour, play, imprinting, conditioning and other adaptive processes. Mammalian phylogeny, synapsid origins, mesozoic mammals, cenozoic radiation of therians. Survey of recent mammals: Prototheria, Metatheria, Eutheria (Placentalia).
