Prerequisites
- bachelor-level knowledge of general physics - orientation in basic results of advanced physics (especially statistical physics and general relativity) - basic knowledge of astrophysics, especially structure and evolution of stars
Course Enrolment Limitations
The course is offered to students of any study field.
Course objectives
Detection of gravitational waves coming from the merger of black hole and neutron star binaries dramatically increased our interest in understanding the origin and evolution of these astrophysical objects. Unsolved problems in this field are connected to advanced stages of single and binary star evolution (birth of white dwarfs, neutron stars, black holes), high-energy astrophysics (accretion, equation of state of dense nuclear matter), and time-domain variability (transients, supernovae).
Learning outcomes
After finishing this course, the student will be able to: - describe the key issues of astrophysics of gravitational wave sources - understand basic concepts allowing further independent study of scientific literature - describe main factors determining the final fate of stars and binary star evolution - describe main channels of formation of gravitational wave sources - use order of magnitude estimates to make sense of new scientific problems
Syllabus
  • 1) lifetime of binaries emitting gravitational waves 2) formation of gravitational wave sources in clusters 3) final stages of single star evolution 4) physical processes influencing evolution of binaries 5) birth of neutron stars and black holes 6) astronomical transients
Teaching methods
lectures, order-of-magnitude estimates of astrophysical processes
Language of instruction
Czech
Further comments (probably available only in Czech)
