Field of Study Examination

For admission for studies of this degree programme, you do not need to take the Field of Study Examination.

Admission without the entrance examination

1. secondary school results with an average 1.5 or higher in the subjects Chinese, Czech/Slovak language and a choice of any two subjects determined by the faculty: history, French, music, information technology, Italian, Latin, maths, German, Russian, Spanish, basics of social sciences;
2. state examination from Chinese (HSK - any level) and secondary school results with an average 2.0 or higher in the subjects Czech or Slovak language.

Secondary school results may be applied for an exemption from the entrance examination by those applicants whose average grade was 1.5 or higher in each of the four profile subjects. The total average result in all subjects is not taken into consideration. Secondary school seminars are also disregarded. The average grade of each profile subject is calculated based on the results of the last four years of study in the following way: the mid-year grade is calculated from the final year, whereas the final grades are calculated from the previous three years. It is also necessary that applicants have studied each of the profile subjects for at least two years during the last four years.

Bachelor’s Degree Studies in Chinese Studies gives students a knowledge of Modern Chinese on the level B-1 SERR and a comprehensive knowledge of Chinese culture, both modern and traditional. Graduates are conversant with all basic areas of Chinese culture and understand the complex inter-connections within this culture. Graduates are also able to see Chinese culture in a global context and comprehend and interpret the social and political events and processes that shape contemporary China and determine its place in the world. Language learning is an important part of the studies. The programme offers an intensive, three-year course in Chinese, covering all basic language skills (speaking, listening, reading and writing). Students on this programme are advised to spend at least one semester in China on a study visit. The programme gives students the language and cultural competencies that enable them to communicate in an informed and effective manner in the Chinese cultural environment.

After successfully completing his/her studies the graduate is able to:

• know fundamental events and processes of Chinese history, understand their significance for the development of Chinese modernity
• explain the significance of most common Chinese social and cultural contexts;
• understand the events and processes in Chinese cultural life, and their historical, social and cultural contexts;
• communicate fluently in Chinese in everyday situations (CEFR level B1, HSK grade 5);
• put their knowledge into practice in various communication situations requiring specialized language and cultural competencies

Graduates find employment in positions of co-ordinators of Chinese-Czech projects, foreign trade, diplomacy, translation and interpreting, and as Chinese language teachers.

A standard scope of a Bachelor's thesis is 70 000 characters including footnotes, cover sheet, content, index, list of literature, and annotations. The students work on their research topic with the guidance of their supervisor. They should demonstrate the ability to work critically with primary sources and secondary literature and find relevant answers to the research questions. The students are required to use primary sources and secondary literature in Chinese language. The students should also demonstrate the ability to work on the research topic through a suitable methodological approach. A Bachelor’s Degree graduate may continue with Follow-up Master’s Degree Studies in Cultural Studies of China at the Faculty of Arts, or on another programme focused on Chinese studies in the Czech Republic or abroad.
