Degree programme objectives
The mission of the Pharmacy study program is to prepare specialists in the field of drugs. By acquiring both general and special knowledge of drugs and medicines, graduates will become key healthcare professionals in minimizing risks and maximizing the effect of pharmacotherapy for both individual patients and society. Graduates may, based on the specific nature of the master's degree, pursue the profession of pharmacist, which is classified as a regulated profession. They can apply pharmacological and basic pharmacotherapeutic knowledge in public pharmacy care, consulting and information activities in pharmacies, apply knowledge of drugs and pharmaceutical policy in communication with patients, doctors and other partners in the field of health and social services. Graduates of the Master program in Pharmacy are most often employed as pharmacists in hospital and public pharmacy. However, the position of clinical pharmacists in hospitals is crucial for the application of graduates of the Pharmacy study program at LF MUNI. For this purpose, the curriculum of study is conceived as a more medically oriented, with a high proportion of clinical internships, compared to previously accredited study programs in the Czech Republic. - Learning Outcomes
After successfully completing his/her studies the graduate is able to:
- apply knowledge of drugs and active substances used in the manufacturing and preparation of medicinal products, incl. their safe and effective use, efficacy and indications, contraindications, drug interactions, dosage , way of use and prevention.
- apply knowledge of the metabolism, pharmacokinetics and effects of drugs followed by their dosage, as well as the effects of toxic substances.
- apply knowledge of drug preparation - pharmaceutical technology, preclinical and clinical evaluation of drugs.
- be well informed and actively look for scientific and practical knowledge about drugs in order to provide appropriate and relevant information about drugs, also in cooperation with doctors and other healthcare professionals.
- to fully understand health promotion products and medical devices and their use.
- know the principles and practically apply professional ethics in contact with the patient.
- be well informed in the area of health care financing and basic pharmacoeconomic issues, have knowledge of quality management of provided health care.
- prepare individual pharmaceutical forms of medicines, orientate (even practically) in the problems of development and production of medicines, storage of medicines at distributors and their further distribution.
- know and manage their control, storage and dispensing in pharmacies and practically communicate with the patient when dispensing.
- have comprehensive knowledge of clinical pharmacy, especially comprehensive evaluation of medication of patients in outpatient and inpatient care, on admission, during hospitalization and on discharge of the patient.
- actively know questions on pharmacotherapy and comprehensively assess it in individual patients with regard to possible risks (risk drugs and diagnoses, polypragmasia, patient polymorbidity and health state including age and risks associated with it)
- provide appropriate pharmacotherapeutic recommendations to fully optimize pharmacotherapy.
- communicate with doctors and other healthcare professionals in the provision of clinical-pharmaceutical care.
- Occupational Profiles of GraduatesGraduate of the Pharmacy study program at LF MUNI will find employment as:
- clinical pharmacist at the hospital,

- bioanalysts in medical laboratories,
- expert in laboratories for drug development, research and control,
- qualified person in pharmaceutical manufacturing and distribution companies,

- academic or expert in science, research, development and innovation institutions.

- Practical TrainingIn accordance with § 10 subsection 1 letter a) of Act 95/2004 Coll., on the conditions of obtaining and recognizing professional qualifications and specialized qualifications for the medical profession of doctor, dentist, pharmacist, during the study students will complete a 26-week practice in pharmaceutical care facilities. The practice is divided into two blocks. The first block of two weeks in the second year of the study follows the teaching of the subject Pharmacy Practice and its aim is to acquaint students with the real operation of pharmacy care facilities. The second block of 24 weeks follows the teaching of the subject Pharmaceutical Care, which takes place in the 4th year of study. The aim of this practice is to acquire all the skills necessary to independently perform the profession of pharmacist, resp. to acquire professional competence. Practice is 40 hours per week.
- Goals of ThesesThe preparation of the diploma thesis is an obligatory part of the study program Pharmacy at the Faculty of Medicine MUNI. The aim of the thesis is to acquire skills of research of the topic, citation of literature sources, independent orientation in the questions on research and literature sources, elaboration of methodology proposal and final form of the work. Preferred topics are clinical pharmacy, pharmaceutical care, pharmaceutical technology, pharmacognosy, pharmacology, pharmaceutical chemistry and drug analysis. The work may have an experimental or literature review character.
- Access to Further StudiesGraduates of the Master program in Pharmacy at the Faculty of Medicine at MUNI are ready to develop their expertise in doctoral degree programs in pharmaceutical, medical or natural sciences orientation.
