Course objectives
The course leads to an understanding of sociology as a science dealing with the structure and dynamic of modern society and to a deeper understanding of its development. The main course frame is based on the discipline of economic sociology. Students will be introduced to basic concepts of economic sociology, which are relevant for understanding the function of complex market societies.
Learning outcomes
The course is designed so that the students after the completion:
- understand sociology as a science and understand the relationship between the sociological and economic view on human behavior
- get a basic orientation in the structure and the dynamics of society
- acquire conceptual apparatus for describing the development and structure of society
- gain ability to see economic life from a wider social perspective.

Teaching methods
The course takes the form of lectures, reading and practice of individual writing (elaboration of the paper).
Assessment methods
The course consists of two blocks of lectures on the given topics and of study hours. There is a final written examination. Students are required to be familiar with both the content of the lectures and the assigned readings. During the term, all students are expected to write a short essay, dealing with a specific issue related to the course curriculum.
If a student enrolls in the course during studying abroad through exchange programs (such as Erasmus), they should contact the course garantor. In such case, the student has two options: (1) take a similar course at a foreign university or (2) take the course later, after returning from their study abroad program.
If a student is found to commit a prohibited act, such as using banned tools, cheating, or removing any part of the exam, the teacher is allowed to interrupt the exam and grade the student with F, FF or FFF, depending on the seriousness of the offence. The mentioned policy applies to all activities that are part of the final evaluation of the course, such as seminar work, essays, tests etc.).
