Course objectives
The goal of the course is to get the students acquainted with the most important political philosophers of the 20th century and their contributions to political thinking. The students will be introduced to key concepts of 20th century political philosophy. Reading of selected texts is an integral part of the course.
Syllabus
  • 1. Introduction. 2. Modernity and the politics of the 20th century: Max Weber. 3. Modernity and republicanism: Hannah Arendt. 4. Critique of liberalism and the concept of the political (Carl Schmitt) and critique of modern rationalism (Michael Oakeshott, José Ortega y Gasset). 5. Public sphere, the theory of communicative action and deliberative politics: Jürgen Habermas. 6. Embattled liberalism: Friedrich August Hayek and Isaiah Berlin. 7. Theory of justice: John Rawls. 8. Political liberalism (John Rawls) and egalitarianism (Ronald Dworkin). 9. Libertarianism: Robert Nozick. 10. Communitarianism: Michael Sandel, Michael Walzer, Alasdair MacIntyre. 11. Environmental and international justice. 12. Final test.
