- Course objectives
- The course is aimed in contemporary research on social stratification and inequality. The first part of the course deals with the class analysis, from its beginnings to the contemporary debate on the death of class. The second part of the course deals with the social mobility. Students will be introduced to the theory of social mobility as well as to the basic log-linear models for analysis of mobility tables. The last part of the course deals with some neglected themes in inequality research and introduces social surveys on stratification in Central-European region and in Czech society in nineties.

- 1. Introduction: sociology of stratification and inequality 2. The death of class? (inequality and stratification in the beginning of 21st century) 3. Class and class inequality: Karl Marx and Max Weber 4. Functionalistic and conflictualistic approach to social inequalities 5. Measuring of class and status 6. Theory of social mobility and fluidity 7. Analysis of social mobility I (mobility tables) 8. Analysis of social mobility II (log-linear models like analytic tools) 9. Social and cultural reproduction 10. Women, ethnic groups, underclass and class theory: the visibility of invisible people 11. Social stratification, socialism and postsocialism (themes, hypothesis, researches and conclusions) 12. Social stratification and Czech society (empirical findings and questions for the future research) 13. Concluding comment
