Course objectives
This course introduce "new" concepts which dominate in the field of contemporary European social policy: social exclusion, social inclusion or social integration and social cohesion. The course consists of weekly thematic modules that typically include textbook and other readings. Students should read the assigned chapter in books and use the IS e-learning system to read the supplemental literature, which is available electronically in PDF format. At the turn of the twenty-first century the terms social cohesion, social exclusion, along with the term social inclusion, form a Bermuda Triangle in the discourse of the European Union that has swallowed up some of the traditional concepts – like class, inequality, or poverty – that had previously been used to describe the society of early and high modernity. This is a reflection of efforts to reinterpret the social problems of today's Europe in a language in which new concepts play a key rol Main objectives of this course can be summarized as follows: - Inform students about concepts social exclusion, social inclusion and social cohesion. - Inform students about problems both, excluded individuals and excluded communities. - Inform students about impact of these concepts on social policy. Complete bibliography is included in the detail syllabus which is placed in the IS e-learning system.
