- Course objectives
- At the end of the course students should be able to understand prevailing current approaches in the research into parties and party systems. They should be able then to use effectively related conceptual schemes and frameworks in order to analyze parties and party systems in contemporary democracies and to explain properties of parties and party arrangements.
- Syllabus
- 1. Introduction. 2. Theory of party families, Social Democrats and Socialists, Far Left, Greens. 3. Christian Democrats, Conservative parties, Liberals, Far Right, Regional and Ethnic parties. 4. Populism and parties. 5. Cleavages and their conceptualization. 6. Concepts of political parties. 7. Concepts and typologies of party systems. 8. Cartelisation of politics. 9. Multilevel party systems. 10. Nationalization of party systems, 11. "Micro" and "macro" level of party competition.
