Course objectives
At the end of the course students should be able to understand prevailing current approaches in the research into parties and party systems. They should be able then to use effectively related conceptual schemes and frameworks in order to analyze parties and party systems in contemporary democracies and to explain properties of parties and party arrangements.
Syllabus
  • 1. Introduction. 2. Conceptualization of political party. 3.-5. Classic approaches to the study of parties and party systems: Duverger, Rokkan, Sartori. 6. Notions and typologies of party systems; 7.-8. Approaches to the study of parties in the developed and less developed countries; 9. Parties and party systems in multi-level arrangements; 10. Cartelisation of party politics. 11. Discussing the position and role of parties in contemporary democracies.
