Course objectives
The aim of the course is to develop methodological knowledge and skills of students, i.e. capacity for critical reading of research reports, integration of different aspects of quantitative and qualitative approaches and to support students´ own research preparation. Focus is mainly on the validity enhancing of research findings and on practical skills deepening. Elaborated and coherent research project will be basis for discussions at seminars. It is expected that students will prepare the project of their diploma thesis. The main purpose is to develop student’s practical capacity for carrying different types of research in psychology.
Syllabus
  • 1.„Disciplined“ a mixed-methods research. Is there really quantiatative and qualitative perspective in psychology research? Purpose of research project, research plan and design. Projet preparation. 2. Summary of traditional research designs: experimental, correlation, (survey), case study (N=1, single-case, small-N, multiple case). Evaluation and action research. Characteristics of reasearch in different areas of psychology. 3.Qualitative analysis – different approaches to data analysis and interpretation. Units of meaning. Content and thematic analysis, grounded theory, narrative, discursive and phenomenological analysis (IPA). 4.Validity in psychology research. Integration of different approches to validity. 5. Presentation and evaluation of student´s research projects.

Teaching methods
Lectures and seminars. Research projects presentation. Class dicussion over the presented projects. Transparent feed-back to the projects by the lecturers.
Assessment methods
Students are expected to articulate a detailed reseacrh project which is evaluated by examiners. Details see the syllabus.
