Course objectives
This is a course which follows the constructionist paradigm of learning by doing. Students' work will be read, analyzed and evaluated throughout the semester. While all the four language skills will be present in the course, emphasis will be placed on writing and reading.
Before being published, students' articles will be subjected to a review by peers and the teacher. The articles are planned to be published in the English section of muniMEDIA.
Due to the workshop-like character of the course, the maximum number of absences from class is set at two.
Syllabus
  • I/ Introduction to the course and language of the media; comparison of the differences in the style of news writing of The Guardian, www.online.muni.cz, The Epigram, the University of Oxford news section. Key words, length of paragraphs, length of sentences, repetition.
  • Output: a reflective essay analyzing differences in style
  • II/ The news story: characteristics of the genre, good and bad examples
  • Output: a news story
  • III/ The interview and the profile story: characteristics of the genre, good and bad examples. The transformation of the interview into a profile story.
  • Output: a profile story
  • IV/ News report of a survey: characteristics of the genre, good and bad examples. Surveying the lives of foreign students at the FSS/MU; analyzing and interpreting the data, writing and editing.

  • V/ Feature: characteristics of the genre, good and bad examples.
