- This is a course which follows the constructionist paradigm of learning by doing. Students' work will be read, analyzed and evaluated throughout the semester. While all the four language skills will be present in the course, emphasis will be placed on writing and reading.
Before being published, every student's article will be reviewed by a peer and the teacher. The articles will be subsequently published in the English section of muniMEDIA or in a forum in the e-learning facility.
Due to the workshop-like character of the course, the maximum number of absences from class is set at two. - Learning outcomes
- By the end of this course, students will:
• be able to write a profile story, a news story and a feature story on the upper-intermediate English level;
• be able to identify the characteristics of the three genres studied;
• be able to provide constructive feedback to a fellow student, commenting on the language, genre, coherence, and interest of the submitted text;
• be familiar with the differences between Czech and Anglo-Saxon journalism. - Syllabus
- Week 1-4: interviewing skills, analyzing profile stories, writing your own profile story
- Week 5-8: news stories: analyzing the pyramid structure, the vocabulary of the headlines and subheads, different styles of news writing of different media, good and bad leads, writing your own news story
- Week 9-12: the feature story: the color piece; the language and structure of the color piece and the feature, analyzing a feature story for its characteristics (OWN WORK), writing your own color piece
