The course Conflicts of Values and Interests is based on a combination of the earlier courses Ethnic Conflicts and Resources Conflicts. In this course, students are introduced to the theoretical basis in the introductory classes, followed by case studies of selected conflicts.

Course objectives

The course aims to introduce the phenomenon of ethnic conflicts. The participants will get a basic knowledge about theoretical concepts, terms and categories which are connected to the research of ethnic conflicts. The main focus of the course lies in the particular case studies.

Learning outcomes

After completing the course, the student will be able to work with the concepts of armed conflicts and their different types. The student will also be able to identify the causes of armed violence, analyze its nature and the possibilities of its solution. The student will also acquire the ability to analyze conflicts and assess the post-conflict situation in different regions of the world.

Assessment methods

Teaching takes place in the form of lectures, in the form of attendance. In the event of a change in the hygiene rules, students will be informed of the alternative type of teaching via mass e-mail. The submission and evaluation of a seminar paper is a prerequisite for the completion of the course. The maximum number of points in the course is 60. Seminar papers will be graded between 0-20 points. A maximum of 40 points can be obtained in the written examination. The grading is graded as follows: A; 60 - 56 points B; 55 - 51 points C; 50-46 points D; 45-41 points E; 40 - 36 points F; 35 points or less.
