Course objectives
The course is an introduction to the issues of media professions and ethics of journalism. The first half familiarises students with the associated areas and theoretical disciplines of applied ethics. The second half focuses on analysing dilemmas and cases taken from media practice. The main topics of the course are as follows: ethics as part of philosophy, media law and self-regulation institutes, levels of professional ethics – personal, professional and civil, norms and values, and reflection of moral dilemmas in selected cases.
Syllabus
  • 1. Introduction. Moral issues, dilemmas and casuistry (lecture). 2. Ethics and professional ethics and codes (lecture). Seminar assignment No. 1: follow one selected daily newspaper for one week and comment on possible collisions with the Code of Ethics produced by the Syndicate of Journalists of the Czech Republic. 3. Presentations and discussions about assignment 1 (seminar). 4. Self-regulation institutions in media. Example of the BBC Code of Ethics (lecture). Assignment No. 2: self-regulation institutes in the Czech Republic and elsewhere, their emergence, functions, and codes. 5. Norms and values. Moral understanding and neutralising moral values (lecture). 6. Presentations and discussions about assignment 2 (seminar). 7. Moral problems, dilemmas and collisions. Reflection of the moral issues in art (lecture). Seminar assignment No. 3: in literature, film, etc., find an artistic reflection of moral issues and dilemmas and comment them. 8. Selected topics of ethics of journalism (lecture). 9. Presentations and discussions about assignment 3 (seminar). 10. Selected topics of ethics of journalism (lecture). 11. Presentations of finals essays and discussion (seminar). 12. Presentations of finals essays and discussion (seminar). 13. Conclusion and course evaluation.

Assessment methods
Lecture and seminar: The course has been designed as 6 lectures and 6 seminars. Credit: Conditions for awarding the credit: written assignment (review, essay or discussion in the extent of 1,000 – 1,500 words) based on the recommended or individually chosen and studied literature.
