Course objectives
The course aims to introduce students to the reflection of ethics in contemporary journalism on the background of wide understanding of topic as a philosophical discipline. The czech tradition of philosophy is accented.

  • The situation of man in modernity, hermeneutic situation
  • Basic ethical concepts, care of the soul (Plato, J. Patocka)
  • Practical virtue (fronésis) - Aristotle, stoicism (Cicero, Seneca)
  • I. Kant
  • Nietzsche and zen
  • Perspectives of ethics in the context of neurosciences
  • Ethics and aesthetics, kitsch, morale and work
  • Ethics and institutions (media law, code of ethics)
  • Engaged journalism, objectivity and independence as a problem
  • Selected cases of ethical issues in the media I
  • Selected cases of ethical issues in media II
  • Perspectives on journalism ethics in the light of "new media"

Assessment methods
Attendance (required, absence of up to 20%), regular homework (commentary on literature), a seminar presentation, final seminary work and test (focused on terminology) and an oral exam.
