Course objectives
This course critically examines qualitative approaches applied in psychological research. The philosophical foundations of qualitative research; epistemology and ontology are introduced. Major concepts in phenomenology, grounded theory, narrative research, phenomenological research and other approaches are disscussed. The ability of the students to propose research project, i. e. to formulate research problem, research questions, proper research design, and variety of data collection procedures is being stressed. Students should be able to utilize some approaches to analysis and interpretation. Ethical issues are involved as well.
Learning outcomes
After taking this course, students will be able:
- discuss the philosophical foundations of qualitative research,
- design and carry out a simple qualitativce research project
- analyse texts in the framework of grounded theory approach, intepretive phenomenological analysis, discourse analysis and narrative approach,
- discuss the validity of findings.

  • 2.Formulation of research problem and research questions with appropriate qualitative approaches

  • 4. Grounded theory - principles and text analysis
  • 5. Interpretive Phenomenological Analysis – principles and text analysis
  • 6. Narrative oriented inquiry (NOI)- principles and text analysis
  • 7. Heuristic research - principles and text analysis

Teaching methods
lectures, group discussion, group and individual analysis of research text.
Assessment methods
Students are supposed to analyze parts of given text according to GT, IPA, NOI, and DA during the course.
. Exam: At the end of the course they will analyze and interpret whole given reaearch text.
